Only him? Police spokesman says 221 Policemen are assigned to Governor Wike

Background

• Governor Wike had earlier alleged that the Inspector General of Police working in tandem with the Rivers State Commissioner of Police are planning to assassinate him.
• The Nigeria Police Force through its spokesman, Jimoh Moshood has denied the claims calling it malicious. Below is a snippet from the response to the allegation;

1. “It is incumbent on the Nigeria Police Force to educate the general public and draw the attention of the governor to the facts and figures available for press and members of the public to verify that there are 221 police personnel attached currently to Governor Nyesom Wike for his personal and official protection.”

• The breakdown: one aide-de-camp, one chief security officer, one unit commander (Special Protection Unit); one unit commander (Counter-terrorism Unit) and one escort commander. Others are one camp commander; one administrative officer to administer the police personnel, 54 inspectors, 136 sergeants and 24 corporals.

Our take on the matter 

• It is good that the NPF has reacted and stated their own side of the story.
• However, we are wondering why it skipped the mind of the police spokesman to address Wike's the allegation that his security detail were at a time withdrawn from him.

Conclusion

• We are never short of allegations and counter allegations especially by our politicians.
